Toughened Safety Glazing

We use toughened safety glass to glaze the side walls and ends of our buildings. Why do we do this, and what’s the advantage to you?

Most pool enclosure manufacturers use polycarbonate “Plexiglass” or “altuglass” type glazing, as they are lightweight and inexpensive to use, and resistant to shattering. The downside of using these materials is that they are more inclined to mist, distort, and scratch than glass, and are not as strong overall.

However, a Summit Leisure Algarve Aquatelescopic enclosure is precision manufactured in toughened safety glass. A pool building manufactured in toughened safety glass is much more resilient to bad weather, does not mist, distort, or scratch, and is safer to use on a moving structure. In the illustration above, you can see a section glazed with toughened safety glass on the right and polycarbonate on the left, demonstrating the greater resistance to misting exhibited by the toughened safety glass.

Using toughened tempered glass is renowned throughout the home because of its strength and resistance.  This type of glass is also used for shower glazing panels in bathrooms, the windows in cars (even off-road vehicles), refrigerator shelving, and glazed doors. Its flexibility, durability and resistance to shattering makes it an ideal material for glazing for a swimming pool enclosure – which is why we use it!

Even though the toughened safety glass we use is heavier than polycarbonate, the weight of the glass is only a small part of the overall weight. Therefore a  Summit Leisure Algarve AquateTescopic telescopic pool enclosure is only 15% heavier on average than a competitor’s building, so it’s not too heavy to guide effortlessly across paving. All our enclosures are very easy to handle with one or two people, as demonstrated in the video at the top of this page.

Summit Leisure telescopic swimming pool enclosures are offered as standard with toughened safety glass side and end walls and polycarbonate roofs. A toughened safety glass roof is also available as an option.
