With the pool marked out, next comes the dig. This is best carried out with a JCB type excavator if there is enough access to get one into the garden. Failing that, a mini-digger is the next best thing. Provision will need to be made to take the excavated spoil away. The cheapest solution would be to use it elsewhere on your property. However, there will be several cubic meters of it so, if losing it on site isn’t practical, it will need to be taken away. The last part of the dig is normally finished with a shovel to avoid an over dig which will require extra back-filling. Tougher sub-soils like shale and heavy bedrock will require the persuasion of pneumatic drills or other heavy power tools.
